Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day throughout March at PSU Schuylkill

Schuylkill Haven, PA (Penn State) March 18, 2010 – St. Patrick’s Day may have ended at midnight last evening, but that is no reason to stop celebrating. There are two special cultural events at Penn State Schuylkill this month that are keeping the spotlight on the Irish. County residents are invited and encouraged to visit the campus to enjoy these events and others that will be taking place in March.

Cultural Events Series – On Wednesday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m., The Screaming Orphans (www.thescreamingorphans.com) will be performing a free concert in the Morgan Auditorium. The band’s music has a pop-rock sound to it, but the foundations in traditional Irish music can be heard. A week later, on March 31, the Broesler School of Irish Dance will also grace the stage of the Morgan Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. This interactive and educational show will feature a variety of Irish dance. If you would like to be added to PSU Schuylkill’s Cultural Events mailing list, contact Jeff Fazio, assistant director of student affairs, at 570-385-6246 or jmf31@psu.edu.

Midday Music Series – March features two Midday Music series shows. Both shows are at noon in the Hidden Stream Café. On March 18, Tejas Singh will be performing.Tejas’ Indie-style music is something that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. Jason LeVassuer’s show last month was cancelled due to snow and has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 23. Jason graces the stage with his very unique audience-interactive style. His spontaneous nature has often led him to grab a trash can (or some other nearby object) and play it as an instrument. His show is a must see experience and his tunes can be previewed at www.myspace.com/jasonlevasseur.

Religious & Philosophical Forum (RAPF) Lecture Series – The spring semester includes three RAPF Lectures. The second lecture is on Friday, March 26 at noon in the R. Michael Fryer Conference Center in the Classroom Building. Imam Anwar bin Nafea Muhaimin, CEO of Masjid Quba Inc., will be addressing the topic "The Islamic Community."

Special Event – Nittany Neighborhood Dinner: A “Nittany Neighborhood Dinner” will be held Thursday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Schuylkill Haven Recreation/Senior Center, co-sponsored by the Schuylkill Haven Council of Churches and Penn State Schuylkill. Catered by Hess Catering, the dinner will be served buffet-style. Speakers from the community and campus will welcome the crowd and the university choir will perform three selections. Door prizes and contests will be available.

The Schuylkill Haven area public is invited to attend. There is no charge to attend the banquet, however a free will offering  will be taken to benefit the heating fund administered by the Schuylkill Haven Council if Churches.
